The collection includes Barton's autobiography (1837) about his activities as a clockmaker; letterbook (1853 September 20 - 1868 September 30); correspondence (1836-1881) concerning the Hydraulion Fire Company of Alexandria, Va., Parrow Opera Troupe, and Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia. There are also accounts (1870-1881); deeds (1804-1867), survey and plats (1852-1860) for land in Alexandria, Va.; fire insurance policies (1837 and 1839); notes (ca. 1839-1864) concerning Alexandria, Alexandria Savings Institution, silver, Stratford Hall, and taxation of government securities; reports (1855-1881) concerning the Hydraulion Fire Company and Ivy Hill Cemetery; obituary and estate inventory (1887-1902). Also included are notes concerning Cracker Hall in Fairfax County; and genealogical notes concerning the Barton and Goodall families.

The Mutual Assurance Society Against Fire on Buildings of the State of Virginia was founded on December 22, 1794 by an act of incorporation by the Virginia General Assembly. On May 17, 1982 the members of the Society changed the name of the company to "Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia".
